Hail Records | Hail That Needs to be Known
Hail records can be very terrifying and crazy for those who have seen it. Learn more here…
Hail can be very common for some of the U.S. population who live in certain parts of the U.S. Many people have not seen hail that is over 5 inches though, and have been in deadly hailstorms. Hail can also cause very unusual phenomena if conditions are right. In this post, we will look at some hail records from the U.S. and the world.
This post is all about hail records.
Mind-Blowing Hail Records
Biggest Hailstone Ever
The first record that will be talked about will be the biggest hailstone in recorded history. The largest hailstone was 8″ in diameter which fell in Vivian, Nebraska on July 23, 2010. It weighed 1.9375 pounds. The previous record was 7 inches in Aurora, NE. There was a tornado on that day in Southeast Michigan because the severe weather that day was nationwide. The final tornado rating was an EF-0. That was the first hail record of this post.
Heaviest Hailstone Ever
The next record of this post will be the heaviest hailstone ever. The heaviest hailstone didn’t even fall in the U.S., it fell in Bangladesh! The hailstone in Bangladesh was 2.25 pounds which fell in the Gopalanj District. Bangladesh gets a lot of storms even with its own tornadic area so the heaviest hailstone falling there isn’t crazy. The heaviest hailstone to fall in the U.S. is the one that was mentioned before in Vivian, NE. Another major weather disaster that happened in Bangladesh was the deadliest tornado ever recorded. The tornado happened on April 26, 1989, and is referred to as the Daulatpur–Saturia tornado based on where the tornado hit. Around 1,300 people died from that tornado.
Deadliest Hailstorm
The deadliest hailstorm in recorded history was fairly far back, and we are looking at a familiar region for this hailstorm. This hailstorm was the April 30, 1888 Moradabad, India hailstorm. 248 fatalities were a result of the storm. The reason I said that this is a familiar region is that India borders Bangladesh where the heaviest official hailstone fell. According to some sources, there was hail in the area at a severe size, being as big as oranges. The hail also piled up to heights over 2 feet off of the ground.
Most Expensive Hailstorm
The most expensive hailstorm in U.S. history was in Phoenix, Arizona on October 5, 2010. The hailstorm caused $2.8 billion in damages, being part of a two-day severe weather outbreak in Arizona. Even though hail caused over half of the damage, there was also a tornado outbreak of 12 tornadoes, even causing a couple of tornadoes which are tied the strongest-rated tornadoes in Arizona’s recorded history. The largest hailstone was 3″ in diameter and fell in Glendale just south of Phoenix. The total cost of the severe weather outbreak was $4.9 billion.
